The Certification enables knowledge and skills required to perform first, second and third-party audits of occupational health and safety management systems against ISO 45001, in accordance with ISO 19011 and ISO/IEC 17021.

If you have been involved in auditing your organization’s Occupational Health & Safety Management System (OHSMS), verifying that you meet the requirements of the ISO 45001:2018 standard, you may be wondering about the next step in your auditing career. Or, you might want to become a health & safety consultant. 

The Certification examines the benefits of implementing an Occupational Health and Safety Management System and the compatibility of OH&S and Quality Management Systems. The Certification deals with

  • purpose and benefits of an OHSMS
  • the role of an auditor
  • plan, conduct, report and follow-up an audit of an occupational health and safety management system to establish conformity with ISO 45001, and in accordance with ISO 19011 and ISO/IEC 17021 where appropriate
  • generating audit findings
  • processes involved in establishing, implementing, operating, monitoring, measuring, analysing, evaluating, reviewing, maintaining and improving an OHSMS
  • terms and definitions used in ISO 45001
  • requirements for OHSMS documented information and the difference between maintaining and retaining documented information

Exam Information

The exam comprises of 40 Multiple Choice Questions out of which the candidate needs to score 70% (28 out of 40 correct) to pass the exam.

Exams are online and proctored based, using a webcam and a reliable internet connection exams can be taken anywhere and anytime.

The total duration of the exam is 1 hour (60 Minutes).

No external sources of information may be accessed during the exam held via ProctorU. Further details of the materials permitted are provided:

  • Identification Proof.
  • If a Candidate does not pass the exam in the second (2nd) attempt, the candidate must wait for a period of at least fourteen (14) calendar days from the date of their attempt to retake the exam for third (3rd) time or any subsequent time.
  • The exam can be taken any number of times.
The ISO 45001:2018 - Certified Lead Auditor Certificate is valid for life.

Displaying your certificate

Remember, when labeling a product or system as certified to an ISO standard:

Don't say: "ISO certified" or "ISO certification"

DO say: "ISO 9001:2008 certified" or "ISO 9001:2008 certification" (for example).



The ISO 45001:2018 - Certified Lead Auditor Certification has no prerequisites but we recommend that delegates have an understanding of how their organization operates and the risk assessment approach currently used by their organizations (should one exist).
